National Honor Society Membership Grows at KHPES

On April 8, 14 students joined the National Honor Society (NHS), increasing its size significantly. At Kaʻū High and Pāhala Elementary School (KHPES), this organization has seen growth over 10 years under the supervision of Mr. and Mrs. Brooks. With new members joining the existing leaders, the group increased its ability to make a difference.
The induction ceremony was held online due to heavy rain that led to the cancellation of the in-person meeting. Despite the obstacles caused by the rain, the members quickly solved this issue by deciding to continue the ceremony online. This decision showcased their leadership skills in action.
The event began with existing members and new inductees introducing one another. Following the introductions, student leaders explained the four pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character, before the inductees took their official pledge.
Even in a virtual setting, the symbolic lighting of the four candles remained a significant part of the ceremony. Now that the 14 new members are officially inducted, the group is ready to get to work. They are currently collaborating to identify local needs and start community service projects. As the NHS grows, it will continue to strengthen the community and provide an example for younger students.
