Ka'u Lady Trojans Aim High for BIIF Banner

By Zia-Rae Wroblewski (Junior, Ka'u High School)

The Ka'u High School Lady Trojans basketball team is hitting the court this season with high ambitions, driven by a mix of family legacy, personal aspiration, and a unified goal: winning the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) banner.

For senior Shaylie, the love of the game is rooted in her family, inspired by her father and brother. Playing the guard position, her sights are set on achieving more wins than last season and securing that BIIF title. Looking beyond high school, Shaylie plans to continue her journey at the collegiate level and is hoping to join the Hilo Lady Vulcansm, she said. She shared that her biggest obstacle—learning to play under pressure—was overcome by remembering her passion and staying calm during intense moments.

Fellow guard Caliyah said she believes she was "meant to play the sport." Her personal goals include winning the coveted BIIF banner and focusing on continuous improvement as a player. Unlike Shaylie, Caliyah is not planning on playing in college, but her dedication to the game is clear. She overcame a fundamental challenge—learning to dribble—through daily, dedicated practice and striving for excellence in every game.

Newcomer Harlem chose basketball simply to "try something new." As a guard, her primary team goal is also to bring home the BIIF banner. Though not planning on collegiate basketball, Harlem brings essential intangible skills to the team. She overcame a significant challenge in leadership by fostering a positive attitude and bringing only uplifting energy to the court.

With three focused guards dedicated to practicing, bringing positive energy, and striving for a championship, the Lady Trojans are poised for an exciting season.

Girls Basketball Team: Shaylie Martinez, Lily Dacalio, Molly Akana, CaLiyah Silva-Kamei, Joslyn Eder, Chloe Makena, Jaylee Navarro, Tenielle Blanco, Dhaylie Cabreros
